Medical Director, Clinical Informatics and Quality Standards

Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Waypoint) provides the full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient tertiary mental health and addiction services to a population of more than 500,000, as the regional psychiatric hospital for Simcoe County, Muskoka, and portions of Dufferin County and Parry Sound. We increasingly serve and lead across the broader Ontario Health Central Region extending to the north Greater Toronto Area (GTA). With 141 beds in six specialized inpatient programs dedicated to providing regional mental health and addictions care, and 15,000 outpatient visits per year, Waypoint serves the needs of children and youth, adults, and seniors. Unique in Ontario, Waypoint has 160 high secure beds for clients served by both the mental health and justice systems.

The Position

Waypoint is seeking an exceptional, visionary, and innovative leader for the newly created role of Medical Director, Clinical Informatics and Quality Standards (Medical Director). In this role, the Medical Director will be an active participant in Waypoint’s continued pursuit of clinical excellence, maximizing quality, advancing best practices, and transforming the patient/client experience. Reporting to the VP, Medical Affairs & Chief of Staff, the Medical Director will help advance Waypoint’s mission and strategic plan, including applying quality improvement methods to advance the implementation of Ontario Health Quality standards across Waypoint and regionally, collaboratively developing and executing a digital health strategy within our Ontario Health Team environment, fostering clinical informatics capabilities, and maximizing physician engagement, including with our partners in a shared Electronic Health Record environment. Through these initiatives, the role encompasses opportunities to partner and lead across the Ontario Health Central Region and the Innovative Model Central Ontario Regional Ontario Health Team. Ultimately, the Medical Director will provide leadership in knowledge translation of evidence-based practices, leveraging technology in quality improvement, and adopting a learning health system approach.

Key leadership initiatives for the new Medical Director will be to:

Promote evidence-based care across Waypoint through the adoption, implementation, and sustainment of quality standards.

Lead and collaborate in continuing education and quality improvement activities to transform organizational culture and daily practice.

Leverage data and technology to support guideline concordant care while advancing quality improvement initiatives.

Participate in communities of practice and utilize external resources and data sources.

Position Waypoint to lead and support the spread of evidence-based practices as a strong partner across the Ontario Health Central Region and in the Innovative Model Central Ontario Regional Ontario Health Team (OHT) for Specialized Populations.

Facilitate Waypoint’s professional staff continuing engagement and satisfaction with EHR implementation and improvements through proactive communication, consultation, and advocacy.

Support Waypoint’s achievement of HIMSS 7 designation by championing the use of advanced analytics and clinical decision support for decision making at the levels of client care and clinical programming, adopting a learning healthcare system approach.

Collaboratively develop and execute a vision for digital health at Waypoint and in the Ontario Health Team environment.

Continually seek and advocate for alignment between Waypoint’s objectives, priorities, practices and external/partnership initiatives, including by representing Waypoint at partnership discussions.


You are a physician licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and recognized as a specialist in psychiatry by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. You are an experienced, inclusive, influential, and visionary leader with a track record in advancing medical leadership, quality improvement, strategy, and partnerships. Recognized as an effective change agent, you have demonstrated your commitment to improving service and operations in a clinical setting as well as participating in broader systems-level change. You have demonstrated quality improvement and medical informatics competencies.
