OPA 2022 MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS CONFERENCE

TIME: 11:00 am – 5:30 pm ET

Each session is 2 hours with 15min breaks between the sessions.

Learning Objectives

General Learning Objectives for the Conference:

Upon attending the conference, attendees will be able to:

  1. Compare and describe current evidence-based pharmacotherapy options for people who use substances in both the withdrawal and maintenance phase, including opiate agonist treatment and anti-craving medications
  2. Compare and describe psychotherapy principles and available psychosocial treatments for people who use substances
  3. Engage in a discussion around challenges and various treatment approaches for complex patients presenting with concurrent disorders

Thursday, November 17, 2022 – Foundation Stream

Psychotherapies for Substance Use Disorders 

Presenter: Dr. Wiplove Lamba 

By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand the general psychotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of concurrent disorders and the importance of trauma-informed care
  2. Describe and learn common Motivational Interviewing techniques used in the treatment of Substance Use Disorders
  3. Appreciate the value in using an integrated approach in the treatment of concurrent disorders
Pharmacotherapy Primer for the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and other Substance Use Disorders (cannabis, stimulant)

Presenter: Dr. Valerie Primeau

By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the importance of diagnosing and treating Substance Use Disorders
  2. Describe the indications, benefits and potential adverse effects of the most common pharmacological agents to treat Substance Use Disorders (with a focus on alcohol, cannabis and stimulants)
  3. Apply current principles for withdrawal management of common substances

*This session will not cover Opioid Use Disorder

Friday, November 18, 2022 – Advanced Stream

Psychosocial Approaches to Stimulant Use Disorder

Presenter: Dr. Tim Guimond

  1. Describe the current supported psychosocial treatments for stimulant use disorders
  2. Explain the principles underpinning the cognitive approaches to stimulant use disorders
  3. Differentiate the community reinforcement approach from other CBT approaches
  4. Describe the possible implementations of contingency management and their utility

Presenter: Dr. David Crockford

By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the importance of diagnosing and treating Cannabis Use Disorder
  2. Describe the evidence, benefits and potential adverse effects of pharmacological agents in the treatment of Cannabis Use Disorder
  3. Apply current principles for the treatment of cannabis withdrawal and cannabis-induced psychosis
  4. Engage in an interactive discussion around diagnostic and treatment challenges of psychotic illnesses in the context of cannabis usage
Approaches to the patient with a stimulant use disorder 

Presenter: Dr. David Crockford

By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the importance of diagnosing and treating Stimulant Use Disorder
  2. Describe the evidence, benefits and potential adverse effects of pharmacological agents in the treatment of Stimulant Use Disorder
  3. Apply current principles for the treatment of stimulant withdrawal and stimulant-induced psychosis
  4. Engage in an interactive discussion around diagnostic and treatment challenges of psychotic illnesses in the context of stimulant usage

 


Presenters:

Valerie Primeau, MD, FRCPC is a bilingual psychiatrist in North Bay.  She has been actively involved in the treatment of concurrent disorders.  She is the physician lead for the implementation of medically-supervised withdrawal management at the North Bay Regional Health Centre and the rural implementation of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Integrated Care Pathway on alcohol use disorder and depression.  She also provides physician leadership at the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) clinic and the Early Intervention for Psychosis (EIP) program. She was a member of the Ontario Health Alcohol Use Disorder Quality Standard Advisory Committee and was the Clinical Lead for the Withdrawal Management Standards with Addictions and Mental Health Ontario.  She sits on the Executive Committee of the Ontario Psychiatric Association (OPA) and is actively involved in resident education at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). 

Wiplove Lamba, MD, FRCPC, Dip ABAM, ISAM C, DAPN is an addiction psychiatrist. He has given over 20 workshops at the national level and numerous more at the local and provincial level in helping people build skills in working with those who use substances. He is the regional co-director of Ontario for the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine and the medical co-lead of ECHO Ontario Addiction Medicine and Psychosocial interventions. 

 

Mike Franklyn, BSc, HBSc, MSc, MD, CCFP AM,  was a family physician practicing in Sudbury for 25 years prior to his retirement in 2018. He had been providing addiction care to patients in Northeastern and Northwestern Ontario for over 15 years with a special interest in the areas of substance use in pregnancy and youth as well as First Nations communities. Dr. Franklyn is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Northern School of Medicine and a mentor for the OCFP Medical Mentoring in Addiction and Pain.

 

Tim Guimond MD, FRCPC, PhD is a psychiatrist and biostatistician at CAMH. He provides clinical services to concurrent disorder patients, has experience teaching medical students, residents and students of other health disciplines substance use treatments including Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Community Reinforcement Approach, and medication options.Tim’s educational background includes medical school at the Johns Hopkins University, a psychiatric residency at the University of Toronto, a Master of Science in Statistics, and a PhD in Biostatistics from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

David Crockford, MD, FRCPC, DABPN, CCSAM, DLFAPA, FCPA, is a Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry. He has been a consulting psychiatrist to the Foothills Medical Centre Addiction Program, Early Psychosis Intervention Program and Adult Psychosis Program treating patients with concurrent addictive and psychiatric disorders for the past 24 years. Dr. Crockford is a recognized national leader in addiction psychiatry where he is the past chair of the section of Addiction Psychiatry Section for the Canadian Psychiatric Association and prior International Area Director (2000-2007) and International Member-at-Large for the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (2001-2007). He certified in Addiction Medicine in 2006.
