Topic of the Conference
A Day with Adam Phillips: On Frustration, On Balance, On Kindness.
Adam Phillips will provide an account of
psychoanalytic concepts on frustration, balance
and kindness, and their significance in relationship
to development.
The program will feature an interview with the speaker, and participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and participate in a discussion.
Guest Speaker – Adam Phillips
Adam Phillips is a British psychoanalyst, writer, and literary critic. He
studied English at Oxford University and then pursued psychology,
specializing in child psychology. For nearly a decade he held the position
of Principal Child Psychotherapist at Charing Cross Hospital, London.
Currently, he divides his time between writing and conducting a private
psychoanalytic practice in Notting Hill.
Phillips has written fifteen books, including: On Flirtation: Psychoanalytic Essays on the Uncommitted Life (1995), Side Effects (2006), and On Kindness (with Barbara Taylor, 2009). He reviews for The London Review of Books, The Guardian, and The Observer.

An application has been made for accreditation of this event as an accredited group learning activity (section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the RCPSC.
Learning Objectives
1. At the end of the conference, participants will be able to understand the psychological underpinnings of frustration, balance and kindness, and how these apply to current psychotherapeutic techniques.
2. At the end of the conference, participants will have a comprehensive review of historic, philosophical, religious and psychoanalytical perspectives of the concepts of kindness and balance, and their role in personal happiness and communal well-being.
3. At the end of the conference, participants will be able to use the concepts of balance and kindness in their psychotherapeutic practice.
